HOW IT WORKS
Four Simple Steps to Bootable Media
WinDiskWriter combines powerful functionality with an elegant interface, giving you professional results without the complexity.
Select ISO Image
Choose the ISO file you want to write onto the USB. This image contains the operating system or tool you wish to boot. WinDiskWriter reads and prepares it for transfer.
Insert USB Drive
Connect your USB drive to the computer. WinDiskWriter will detect it, preparing it as the target device for writing the ISO. Ensure no important data remains, as it will be erased.
Verify & Boot
Before writing, the software can verify the ISO file’s integrity to prevent errors. After writing, you can boot from the USB on your PC to run the OS or tool directly.
Start Writing
Click start to begin transferring the ISO to the USB drive. The process formats the USB, writes the data, and makes it bootable. Progress is shown until completion.

Common Issues & Solutions
Running into problems? Find quick solutions to the most common issues below.
USB drive not detected
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting your USB drive. If the issue persists, try a different USB port. Make sure the drive is properly formatted (FAT32 or NTFS). For drives larger than 32GB, you may need to use a third-party formatting tool first.
Write process fails midway
- This usually indicates a faulty USB drive or a corrupted ISO file. Try re-downloading the ISO and verify its checksum. If the problem continues with multiple ISOs, your USB drive may be damaged and should be replaced.
Computer won't boot from USB
- Enter your BIOS/UEFI settings (usually F2, F12, or Del during startup) and ensure USB boot is enabled. Set the USB drive as the first boot device. For Windows 11, make sure Secure Boot is configured correctly.
Write speed is very slow
- USB 2.0 ports are significantly slower than USB 3.0. Ensure you're using a USB 3.0 port (usually blue) for faster speeds. Also, the quality of your USB drive affects speed. High-quality drives with faster write speeds will perform better.
Error: Access Denied
- Run WinDiskWriter as Administrator by right-clicking and selecting 'Run as administrator'. Make sure no other programs are accessing the USB drive. Close all File Explorer windows showing the drive.
ISO file appears corrupted
- Download the ISO file again from the official source. Verify the SHA-256 or MD5 checksum matches the one provided by the source. Incomplete downloads often cause this issue.

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Find everything you need to know about WinDiskWriter.
What is WinDiskWriter?
It’s an open‑source tool for macOS that creates bootable USB drives with Microsoft Windows installation media.
Who develops WinDiskWriter?
It’s developed by TechUnRestricted and published on GitHub under a free license.
Why use WinDiskWriter?
To prepare Windows installation USBs directly from a Mac without needing Windows tools.
Is WinDiskWriter free?
Yes — it’s free and open source.
What problem does it solve?
It lets Mac users create Windows bootable installers, something tools like Rufus can’t do on macOS.
Can it create bootable Windows USB drives?
Yes — it writes Windows ISO images to USB in a bootable format.
Does it support patching the Windows 11 installer?
Yes — it can patch the Windows 11 ISO to bypass requirements like TPM and Secure Boot.
What about legacy BIOS support?
It supports UEFI and can also prepare drives compatible with older BIOS systems.
Can it split large install.wim files?
Yes — it automatically splits large WIM files because FAT32 limits files to less than 4 GB.
Does it support multiple languages and improved UI?
Recent versions include multiple language support and improved options.
Which macOS versions does it run on?
Runs on macOS from older versions like Snow Leopard 10.6 up through the latest versions.
Does it support both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs?
Yes — recent builds support both Intel and ARM (Apple Silicon) Macs.
Which Windows versions can you write?
Supports Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 images.
Can it handle 32‑bit Windows ISOs?
Earlier versions focused on 64‑bit only, but newer releases expand 32‑bit support.
Is it compatible with virtual machines?
Yes — the bootable USB can be used to install Windows on VMs that support USB boot.
How do you install WinDiskWriter?
Download the macOS app from GitHub releases and open it — no complex installer.
Do you need admin rights to run it?
Yes — writing drives typically requires administrator permission.
What USB drive size is recommended?
Usually at least 8 GB (or larger for bigger ISO files).
Does it automatically format the USB drive?
Yes — it formats the USB drive to make it bootable.
Do you need to download anything else?
You only need the Windows ISO and a USB — the app handles the rest.
What if macOS says the app “can’t be verified”?
macOS Gatekeeper may warn since it’s not notarized. You can control‑click Open or adjust settings to allow it.
USB drive not showing in the app?
Try scanning all disks (Debug menu) or re‑plug the drive.
What if the ISO doesn’t mount?
Manually mount the Windows ISO before using the app — this can fix “cannot verify” issues.
Error splitting install.wim?
Ensure the ISO is not corrupt and supports splitting; large files need this step.
It fails during writing?
Check USB health, format the drive, or try another Mac port; also update the app.
